Seisen Students Share Their Talents With Trust Garden Resident

On May 19th, Seisen's Gr. 3 and Gr. 4 students held a special performance for the residents of Trust Garden to celebrate St. Raphaela Day.  In the spirit of St. Raphaela, we are encouraged to reach out and help others with our gifts and talents.

Students prepared a varied program of music and dance. The First Communion students danced reverently in their white dresses, while the schola sang along.  The Gr. 3-4 choir shared songs from around the globe.  The Gr. 4 students performed on their recorders.  The SASA Monday dancers performed "Singing In The Rain."  The residents joined in for the popular song "Do Re Mi."  Finally, all the students performed their flash mob mash-up while many of the Trust Garden staff danced along.

We are grateful to all who helped us with chaperoning on that day, especially parents who took time out of your schedules to come to school.

The Gr. 3-4 choir sings "Music Alone Shall Live."

The First Communion group shares the song "Table of Plenty."

The Gr. 4 students performed on their recorders.

Residents enjoyed the magical sounds of the SASA girls performing "Singing In the Rain."
The students ended with their flash mob mash-up, Advice to Seisen Seniors.  Even some of the staff members and residents joined us by clapping their hands and dancing.

Grade 3/4 Writing Celebration

The school year is coming to a close. Fourth graders worked hard this year adjusting to new expectations for writing, and today they shared some of the products of that hard work during a Writing Celebration at the end of the day.

We hope you were able to attend!

After an introduction during which a few students from each class shared work with the whole group, fourth graders and third graders went to stations where they met parents and other students and shared their work.

Be sure to check out your daughter's writing when she brings home her portfolio. The attached rubrics include descriptors that your daughter can explain. Ask her about her writing goals for next year!

St. Raphaela Day

Seisen celebrated St. Raphaela Day today by devoting their time to service. Many grade levels volunteered in various places around Yoga. In honor of St. Raphaela, fourth graders danced and sang for an excited audience at Trust Garden.

Afterwards, high schoolers shared their experiences on service trips to schools Vietnam and East Timor.  They taught fourth graders how to make friendship bracelets, which they will send to students in East Timor.

The final part of the day involved sweat and dirt. Fourth graders used what they learned from the plant unit last year to dig up weeds on the playground. Once the weeds were dug up they planted some beautiful herbs that will be used by the school.

4B Introduced to Badminton in PE!

Central idea: Learning the fundamental skills and techniques of badminton such as movement, striking the shuttle/birdie, game sense and strategies.

The 4B class has spent the last few weeks learning the basic skills to badminton and introduced to the game! The first skill they learned was how to properly serve.

Success criteria to serve a shuttle/birdie:
1). Opposite leg slight ahead of the other
2). Hold the birdie at my waist
3). Hold the racquet like a handshake hold and swing it back
4). Step with opposite foot while bringing racquet forward
5). Don't throw the birdie and make contact with the racquet!

They have also been introduced to the different types of strokes: forehand, backhand, overhead clear and smash. The girls have enjoyed the round robin single tournament and playing against their classmates.

Field Trip to Yayoi Kusama: My Eternal Soul

Over the next few days, the fourth graders will finish the summative task for the How We Express Ourselves unit, which is called Expression through the Arts. They will use their knowledge of the elements of art (line, shape, color, space, value, form, texture) and the principles of design (balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm and unity) to create artwork that reflects a social issue.

Today, the students used this knowledge to interpret artwork by Yayoi Kusama. Your daughter should be able to share some of her observations with you using specific vocabulary, such as geometric shapes/form and organic shapes/form, actual texture and implied texture, positive space and negative space, and tint/shades/shading (value).
